Everyone’s Surprised… Mistakes while Applying Eye Makeup & Choosing Mascara
Even such a trivial and obvious thing as applying mascara often ends up in dismal failure. Too bad, wrong lash makeup seems to be very eye-catching. To make things worse, it can spoil the whole makeup you’ve been putting on passionately. Even the choice of mascara tends to pose problems. Most women have no idea about picking the right mascara brush or have a wrong picture of what a given shape of the brush is going to do to their lashes. Today, we are rounding up the most common mistakes while choosing mascara, as well as mascara mishaps, turning the mascara into masquerade.
Eye makeup mistakes
1. Wrong shape of a brush
Women usually adopt quite simple criteria: while shopping for a mascara, they choose a brush which has the size and shape picturing the effect they desire to achieve. Sadly, a big spiral brush doesn’t necessarily mean big (long, voluminous) lashes. It’s usually big brushes getting on eyelids or even eyebrows, not reaching corner and shorter lashes, requiring the skill to be applied.
An ideal brush isn’t too big, its bristles aren’t sparsely arranged, it has longer bristles in the middle and is narrowed at the ends. In other words, it has a shape of an ellipse but it’s not too big. With this kind of a brush, you won’t just get nice separation or avoid clumps but also reach each and every, even the shortest, lash.
2. Improper material of a brush
Luckily, most women give up on fluffy brushes and turn to silicone wands which are more precise. It is fluffy brushes to be blamed for clumpy lashes and failing to separate them nicely.
A silicone brush has been designed because its nylon ‘predecessor’ didn’t work well.
3. Composition of mascara – it really matters
Most mascaras simply make up a mixture of waxes increasing hold, black pigments and water. Preservatives extend freshness of the product but the lashes are totally neglected. Luckily, there are mascaras being made now, infused with nutrients which bolster, as well as condition, regenerate, protect and even stimulate lashes to re(grow). In their list of ingredients, you can spot herb blends, sprout extracts or e.g. keratin.
4. Not keeping the brush clean
Few of us wash mascara wands but it turns out to be a must-do if we want to keep the product effective. An unwashed mascara brush is both the source of bacteria and the ‘center’ of mascara clumps. During application, they cling to your lashes or flake off and get into the eyes irritating the conjunctiva.
5. Too much mascara on lashes
It is still a huge problem and a mistake made by lots and lots of women. We tend to go too far with the product’s amounts, which is most visible on lashes – one coat too much and our eyelashes are clumpy, unnaturally thick, weighed down with too much mascara and instead of creating gorgeous makeup, they make us look grotesque and unprofessional.
6. Adding multiple mascara layers during the day
It is one of the most serious mascara mistakes. It is really hard to apply a new coat of mascara to the lashes covered up with the dried product. You won’t get nicely separated lashes; instead, you will end up with unnatural amount of mascara. To make things worse, it may make lashes fall out. When the brush must deal with such stiff lashes, you need to bend it, which leads to lash breakage and pulling out. If makeup is supposed to look incredible but you spot mascara flakes after a few hours of wear – gently remove the product from lashes and apply the mascara again, or simply press the wand to the tips of lashes for a darkening boost. In this way, you make touch ups without pulling lashes out.
