Coloured mascaras – hit or miss?

The most popular mascara colour is definitely black. It is irreplaceable when it comes to giving our look depth and expressiveness. Does it mean, then, that coloured mascaras cannot look good? Actually, it depends.

Make-up can have many different versions. It changes depending on our mood, time of day, season and occasion. We put on make-up differently on a daily basis and for a big night out. One of the boldest variations include the use of coloured mascaras.

Coloured mascaras

By many people they are associated with kitsch and cosmetics for little girls. We are reluctant to try coloured mascaras because we think they will make us look unattractive. The black one is a safer option and it usually has better quality. This is a very strong belief that is reflected in the sales numbers. It’s a pity because coloured mascaras give a lot of possibilities.

When should you apply coloured mascara?

Definitely, this is not a good idea on a daily basis, but coloured mascaras can turn out to be a great make-up idea for a special occasion. They perfectly fit into the atmosphere of summer music festivals as well as New Year’s Eve parties or a photo session. The most important is an idea on how to introduce a colour.

How to apply coloured mascara?

In make-up it’s good to stick to one simple rule – mixing the right colours. Some look good when combined, others simply don’t. If we make colourful make-up, it’s safe to stick to one colour (it can be in different shades). The coloured mascara is such an expressive accent that it will look good also with delicate make-up. Adding some colour will give the look the desired expressiveness – like a coloured eyeliner – but without exaggeration.

Shade ranges for coloured mascaras:

The most accessible and interesting colours are:

– blue or sky-blue,

– dark or light green,

– neon pink, orange or yellow,

– purple or plum.

Which colour should you choose?

Keep in mind that no other colour is as universal as black is. It’s good to take into account the effect we want to achieve, the type of occasion and our general outfit before we make a final decision.

Blue shades match any eye and hair colour, if we use blue mascara in the right amount, our eye will be optically enlarged. Violet mascara will perfectly match the green and blue eyes at the same time highlighting the shade of the iris. People with brown or hazel eyes should own a green mascara.

Combining make-up colours

Keep in mind –never combine too many colours in your make-up. If you decide on green mascara, make smoky eyes in shades of dark green or universal black or brown. Avoid combining contrasting colours, because coloured mascaras can give us an exaggerated thus not very attractive look. Moderation and aesthetics matter.
